About The Author

     John D. Letaw is a retired Naval officer who spent most of his military and civilian career in the Pacific region. Following the Navy, John worked as a defense contractor in San Diego and Iwakuni, Japan; a civil service professional at the U.S. Pacific Command in Hawaii; and as a missionary in Yamanaka, Japan.
     In all these roles, John and his family have relied upon TRICARE for their health care needs, giving him a broad perspective on getting the most from this valuable benefit. He has been enrolled in TRICARE Standard, TRICARE Prime, and presently in TRICARE Overseas Select. He and his family have used TRICARE both in SOFA and non-SOFA status overseas, giving him a broad perspective in the many ways families are impacted by these various plans.
     In the midst of his overseas assignments, John became more and more attuned to the urgent need for active and retired military families to learn about TRICARE. This led him to launch his Facebook group "TRICARE Around the World". His groups have grown to become the world’s largest and most active online community dedicated to sharing information about TRICARE – as of this writing, approaching 10,000 members. The questions, stories, struggles and victories of families just like your own have had a profound influence on the development of his book.
